Ever since the 2007 launch of the original iPhone, carriers, manufacturers and cell phone users have been searching for the iPhone killer. It started with a LG employee who tagged the title on the LG Voyager which had stereo bluetooth, 3G, photo messaging-all wonderful things that the iPhone did not have at the time. But the touchscreen was choppy, the browser funky and after all, the Voyager wasn’t even a smartphone.
Then came the Samsung Instinct, another feature phone that also did not wound the iPhone despite Samsung’s tricky ads (they compared the device to the Apple iPhone even though the iPhone 3G was just days away from launch).
But now, it looks like we have found one! Android in August took the 7% share of the U.S. market that the iPhone lost, according to Millennial Media’s “Monthly Mix”. The iPhone still leads with a 48% share, but at this pace, Google’s open source OS will surpass the iPhone in 4-6 months.
Other parts of the monthly stats showed Motorola jumping past RIM to be the third biggest seller in the U.S. behinmd Samsung and Apple. The iPhone is the biggest selling handset with about 27% of the total followed by thew original Motorola DROID with 9.44% 5 other Android models are in the top 20.
What about the fact that the iPhone is just 1 model while there are Android units coming out of everyone’s ear? Do you see that trend ending? No? So there is no need to adjust for it.
Ha! What about Windows Phone 7. That will shoot down Android. Uh…no. Considering that AT&T has gone on record as wanting to be the carrier for Windows Mobile 7, all that OS will do is cannibalize iPhone sales.
